Why do you need an eye test?

Many thousands of people in the UK today have an eye disease but don’t know it. You could be one of them. By the time you notice that your vision is affected, it may be too late to save all your sight.

Just 20 minutes could save your sight

A regular eye test can help detect eye diseases before you notice the effect on your sight. Early treatment can often prevent your sight from getting worse.

This information explains what all adults should expect from a good eye test (children may need different tests ).

A contact lens check is not the same as a full eye test. Contact lens wearers need regular eye tests as well as contact lens checks.

A full eye test should take about 20 minutes

Opticians who test your eyes are now called optometrists.
The information will help you to talk through what’s best with your optometrist.

The Royal National Institute or the Blind (RNIB) recommends that you have an eye test at least once every two years, or more often if advised.

Eye tests vary according to individual needs and the equipment used by the optometrist. You may wish to visit several optometrist’s practices to select one that you feel comfortable with.
